A Collection of Vintage and Classic Scandinavian Pieces

This is an impressive array of Scandinavian finds here in this guest cottage belonging to John Baker and Juli Daoust of Mjolk, Toronto. The 1940's cocktail cabinet is by architect Alvar Aalto and was an online find. It is made of mahogany with the signature Aalto bent birch legs. The trio of framed Swedish lithographs was found in a local Toronto market while the dining set is from Artek - a 1955 design by Ilmari Tapiovaara. Nice.

A Cool and Relaxed Scandinavian Style Holiday Home

Check out this cool and relaxed holiday home located on the shores of Lake Huron (one of the five great lakes of North America, which borders both Canda and USA). This house was renovated by owners John and Juli Baker, who also happen to own Mjolk (pronouced Mi-yelk), a great Scandinavian and Japanese design store based in Toronto. So no surprise to see the pure aesthetics and products of Scandi and Japanese design used throughout this home.

Winnipeg Skating Shelters by Patkau Architects

I have been admiring these elegant temporary plywood shelters designed by Patkau Architects from Canada. Located by a skating trail on a frozen river in Winnipeg, "they stand with their backs to the wind like buffalo, seeming to have life and purpose as they huddle together shielding each other from the elements." The shelters are made with two layers of flexible plywood over a timber frame - with plywood flooring and seating inside. Not only do these shelters function as a reprieve from the freezing wind, they are also an unique architectural sculpture in the landscape. Photographs via Dezeen and quote from Patkau.
